Spikenard Essential Oil Benefits

Antifungal

Spikenard oil has antibacterial properties, making it a natural choice for use in skin care treatments. Fungal related infections can be treated which for some people are common skin problems.

If you suffer from dermatitis, patchy, dry, or itchy skin, you may find relief with this oil. Always seek professional medical advice first and test for allergies.

Antibacterial

The antibacterial properties are also good for clearing up skin problems. As well as other internal bacterial infections, and helping to keep wounds clean and free from infection. If you have used antibacterial products before you will know there is a long list of potential uses.

Fragrance

Spikenard has an interesting fragrance, and it’s often used as a perfume or a spray around the home. It’s best described as an ‘earthy’, and ‘moss-like’ fragrance. That may not sound too appealing, but it’s actually very enticing.

Anti-Inflammatory

Along with the anti-bacterial properties, the oil is also an effective anti-inflammatory. You can use the oil to reduce swelling, both on external injuries and also internal swelling. Our digestive and respiratory systems are often compromised due to inflammation. This is a natural solution that many find relief with.

Laxative

Being constipated and having trapped wind can be incredibly painful, and difficult to remedy. Some people just don’t want traditional medicine and the side-effects that come with it. Spikenard is a natural laxative, and as such offers a natural alternative. You must act with care when using it for this purpose though.

Sedative

Another powerful use for Spikenard is an as sedative. Obviously, it’s not going to just put you to sleep on command. That wouldn’t be a good idea. What it does do is calm the whole body and help you relax and sleep more naturally. Used in a diffuser you can set a calm tone. Like the Pilgrim Collection Anton Diffuser for example.

Treating Allergies

With all of the natural healing properties mentioned above, it comes as no surprise that it’s good at relieving the symptoms of allergies for a lot of people. Diffusing some of the oil into the air when you’re suffering from hay fever, or irritation to pets can make a huge difference.

How to Use Spikenard Essential Oil

I talked through the most notable benefits of Spikenard oil above. I will say once again as a disclaimer; don’t use oils without being fully aware you are using them safely! All I can do is give you guidance and advice from my own experience and know how.

When using the oil on your skin with massages etc always make a blend with a carrier oil. I covered carrier oils before, so sweet almond, coconut, jojoba etc are all fine. Here some ways you can use the oil:

Diffusing

Like I have already mentioned, and talk about all over my blog – I love diffusing. By using a diffuser you remove the need to get your hands dirty and remove any risk of skin reactions. Just put a few drops in and let the diffuser spray a fine mist into the air and you can breathe in the oil.

Massage

As mentioned earlier, Spikenard is a great oil to use with massage. Mix a couple of drops with a generous amount of carrier oil and work the blend as you would any massage oil.  You get the added benefit of stimulating blood circulation, relaxing your muscles, and all of the previously mentioned aromatherapy benefits.

Steam

I covered a really good sinusitis oil blend recipe to use with steam to clear out the sinuses. You can use the same principle with Spikenard. Prepare a bowl of steaming hot water, place a towel over your head to keep the steam contained and put a couple of drops in the water. Breathe slowly in and out for a few breaths a time.

What Can You Blend Spikenard With?

The best oils to blend with Spikenard are:

  • Myrrh
  • Lavender
  • Orange
