It was the name that first piqued my interest, doesn’t Angelica sound just…angelic! I started looking into angelica essential oil benefits and uses and was very impressed with this oil.
Angelica root essential oil is made through a steam distillation process from the roots of the Angelica plant. It’s also known as Holy Spirit Root Oil, Holy Ghost Oil, and the Oil and Root of Angles. This is because the oil and parts of the Angelica plant were first used hundreds of years ago for its various healing properties.
Angelica oil has antispasmodic, diaphoretic, digestive, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, nervine, stimulant, stomachic, and tonic substance properties. I will look at how these properties translate into health benefits below:

Angelica Essential Oil Benefits and Uses
Provides Relief from Digestive Issues and Trapped Wind
Angelica oil is very effective at helping to relieve trapped wind and flatulence, soothe digestive pains, stomach spasms, and other intestinal issues. The oil does this by relaxing the abdominal and intestinal muscles.
Helps to Flush Toxins from the Body
This oil stimulates the body’s own natural healing system. It stimulates blood circulation, and sweating, and the result is more toxins being flushed from your body naturally. This results in you feeling mentally sharper, physically better with more energy and aids weight loss.
Improves Liver Function
Angelica oil stimulates secretions in the liver and helps to keep your liver functioning at its best. Your liver is important to keep your blood healthy and breaking down fats to give you energy.
Helps with Anxiety and Depression
There are some strong relaxant properties in angelica oil. It’s hard to describe the feeling without experiencing it, but diffusing this oil into a calm atmosphere is incredibly relaxing. You can reduce anxious thoughts and depressive moods and lift your spirits.
Calms Nerves
The tonic properties in this oil help to calm nerves. If you suffer from any conditions that affect your nervous system, or just find yourself on the nervous side then give this oil a try.

Ways to use Angelica Essential Oil
Here are a few methods of suggested use:
Aromatic – This is a great oil to diffuse and create a nice calming environment. It has a really pleasant scent and a lot of the benefits discussed above are best achieved through diffusing.
In a warm bath – Try putting a few drops in a warm bath and closing yourself in the bathroom to enjoy the steam and the bath water.
Topically – You can apply angelica oil topically by mixing with a carrier oil and massaging into areas of your body that needs relaxing. Angelica has great muscle and nerve relaxing properties.
On a pillow or tissue – I enjoy using this oil on a tissue to smell when I want, or even just adding a couple of drops to my pillow.
Angelica Essential Oil Side Effects and Precautions
You should always seek medical advice if you are pregnant, have a chronic disease, or think you may be allergic to this oil. I always advise diluting essential oils with carrier oils before using them topically and never let them come into contact with broken skin or sores.
In Summary
Angelica essential oil benefits and uses cover a wide range of positive health benefits that help to make this one of the more popular oils used in aromatherapy. If you’ve never used Angelica I recommend adding a bottle to your collection, I’m sure you’ll find a use for it.
