Netra Tarpana is a form of Ayurvedic therapy that focuses on the eyes. You can carry out Netra Tarpana at home once you know what you’re doing, or have someone qualified in this form of therapy visit you in the comfort of your home.
Netra Tarpana Eye Treatment Procedure
If you have never had or seen this form of therapy before it’s quite unique. You (the patient) lies down on a table facing up. A figure-8 is made from black gram dough to fit around both eyes in one piece. It’s important the dough fits around the eyes and is water tight as some oil will be used on the eyes.
As you keep your eyes closed some lukewarm medicated oil, or ghee is placed over the eyes. Sometimes this oil will be fused with certain herbs, but typically it’s just a clarified butter oil. The oils is replaced or topped up several times over a 30 minute period as you lay back and relax.
Benefits of Netra Tarpana
We tend to put our eyes under more strain than ever. Our daily routines include staring at visual displays for long periods, reading small text on handheld devices, and working long hours.
There aren’t a lot of dedicated treatments designed to help massage and relax our eyes. Netra Tarpana is designed to do this however. The benefits include strengthening eye tissues, soothing and relieving dry eyes and pains, you eyes will feel lighter and your eyesight will feel sharper afterwards.
Patients have found relief from:
- Chronic conjunctivitis
- Eye disease
- Glaucoma
- Reduced range of motion
- Corneal ulcers
It’s not a commonly found form of treatment. If you can find a qualified practitioner near where you live I recommend trying this treatment. Carrying out Netra Tarpana at home should only be done by someone with experience, or under supervision of someone with experience.
Although the oil is lukewarm and doesn’t present much of a risk there is potential for injury. Always act safely and seek medical advice is you feel any pain or discomfort. The treatment should feel rejuvenating.
