Snoring is a snorting or wheezing noise that varies from incredibly loud to almost unnoticeable. The best essential oils to stop snoring can help reducing the volume of snoring and offer a natural solution to the problem.
Snoring can be a huge problem in relationships. The worst part is that the person snoring typically doesn’t notice they are snoring. It’s the other person in the room (or the next room) that has the disturbed sleep.
The noise is generated from the tissues and soft palate in the mouth, the throat and the nose all vibrating. It’s estimated that one in four people snore, and it’s something that seems to be on the increase.
What Are the Main Causes of Snoring?
The noise is created by the vibrations of the soft tissues in your neck and head vibrating as you breathe while you sleep. When you are asleep your airways relax and this causes them to narrow making a breathing obstruction. You may have noticed this become worse if you have a cold or suffer with sinusitis as this also narrows the passageways.
A few factors that increase the risk of snoring include:
- Drinking a lot of alcohol
- Being overweight
- Sleeping position
- Sinus congestion

Best Essential Oils to Stop Snoring and Help with Sleep Apnoea
Eucalyptus Oil for Snoring
Eucalyptus is an obvious choice. If you’ve used it to help with a cold you will know how powerful this oil is at opening up your sinus passages and helping you breathe more easily. This oil also has antispasmodic and antiseptic properties and is incredibly effective at helping you breathe easier.
It blends well with other oils and a few drops on your pillow or on a piece of cloth near the side of your bed will make a difference to your quality of sleep.
Marjoram Oil for Snoring
I was recommended marjoram oil by an aromatherapist to help with my sinusitis and it worked wonders blended with eucalyptus. It’s found in most pre-made sleeping blends and helps with sleep apnea and other sleeping disorders.
Try using a few drops on your pillow or diffusing this oil in your bedroom. It also has a lovely sweet scent too, so it’s a welcome aroma to the bedroom.
Lavender Oil for Snoring
Lavender makes its way onto a lot of lists for general all-round well-being. It’s very effective at soothing the body and helping you relax. Being more relaxed means less congestion and stress on your breathing passages which reduces snoring.
Lavender promotes a good night’s sleep, helps you to relax, and creates a calm atmosphere. If you’re making blends you should include a couple drops of lavender.
Valor Oil for Snoring
Valor is a blend specifically designed to aid sleeping and reducing snoring. It includes frankincense, rosewood, spruce and almond oil. Carefully prepared by professional aromatherapists it’s an obvious choice if you want a ready to go recipe.
The wide collection of properties in the oils included in this blend cover insomnia, sleep apnea, and snoring. I’ve read some of the feedback from users and it’s very positive.
Thyme Oil for Snoring
Thyme is a common choice in aromatherapy for clients with sleeping disorders. Ideally, you should make a blend with a carrier oil and apply this topically to your body. A lot of people say that using it on their feet helps them to sleep sounder.
Rubbing a little onto your chest will allow you to breathe in the vapour overnight. Alternatively, you can diffuse it while you’re sleeping.
Peppermint Oil for Snoring
Peppermint oil has a lovely fresh fragrance and is used to ease asthma, sinusitis and coughs because it opens the sinus passageways. This means you can breathe easier while you sleep and reduce the vibrations and noise that causes snoring.
It also has strong anti-inflammatory properties and is a good healing oil. Check you have a GRAS grade oil that’s safe for ingesting and gargle a couple of drops in a glass a water before bed.
How to Use Essential Oils to Stop Snoring
There are a few different ways to use essential oils to help deal with snoring. See which of the following methods works best for you:
A Few Drops on Your Pillow
This is an obvious choice to get the oils close to your nose while you’re sleeping. Be very careful not to let the oil come into contact with your mouth or eyes as this can cause some serious irritation.
Using a Diffuser
Diffusers spray the oil into the air over several hours. This allows you to absorb the oil properties in moderation while you sleep which is an effective way to treat snoring and sleeping disorders.
Check out my review of the Pilgrim Anton diffuser I’m currently using.
Applying to Your Feet
This is a method that has proven very effective for a lot of people. Take a carrier oil, add a couple of drops of essential oil and rub it into the sole of your foot before going to bed.
