What are Bunions?

A little outline for those looking for some more information on bunions. Bunions are the result of a deformity in the joint around the base of the largest toe on the feet. This forces the bone to point outwards, creating that swelling you will know as the bunion.

The medical name for a bunion is Hallux Valgus.

Symptoms that you have a bunion include:

  • A visible bump on the side of the foot
  • Pain when touching the big toe and joint as the base of the toe
  • Red swelling and inflammation
  • Hard, dry skin around the area

Leaving a bunion alone is the worst thing you can do. The problem only gets worse and the swelling and pain will increase. Traditional methods as prescribed by a doctor includes painkillers, bunion pads, and wearing more suitable footwear. With surgery being an option for more severe cases.

Using Essential Oil Treatment for Bunions

Using essential oils is another option and one that’s become more popular in recent years. It’s something you can do yourself at home and doesn’t come with any of the side effects that traditional medicine does.

The main purpose of essential oils is to treat the bunion with anti-inflammatory oils to ease the swelling and pain. Similar to the essential oils for gout that I covered, lessening the pain and swelling will make a huge difference to how you manage the condition.

Before using oils, people who have seen good results tell me they soaked their foot in Epsom salts first to relax the muscles in their foot. Then you can massage oils into the bunion for a few minutes. Repeating this every other day will absolutely make a positive difference.

You can experiment with different blends and mixtures too. I also recommend using a little carrier oil to make a more workable massage blend. If you already have a good muscle rub blend, or a recipe that works well with your skin, massage that in.

Essential Oil Recipe for Bunions

A recipe given to me by a friend you treated their bunion is as follows:

  • 6 drops of eucalyptus oil
  • 4 drops of raven
  • 1 drop of wintergreen
  • 3 drops of lemon

Dilute with carrier oil to suit your own preference or if you’re concerned about the sensitivity. I’d love to hear any other recipes you have found worked well for you. Please drop me a note through the contact form and I will check it out and publish it here for others to try.

Do Essential Oils Dissolve Bunions?

There has been a lot of claims and stories thrown around that you can dissolve a bunion with essential oils. It’s not quite as simple as that, and the deformity of the bone causing the foot to stick out isn’t going to change.

What you will experience is a reduction in pain and swelling. You should always consult the advice of a doctor if you have a bunion, and using oils will often be a complementary part of your healing plan along with their advice. A lot of people prefer oils to tradition medicines due to the health implications and possible side effects, I know I do.

A lot of people like to use lemon essential oil, either on its own or as part of a blend. Lemon is very powerful at cleansing the area being massaged, and excellent at nourishing the skin. It has powerful antioxidant properties, so is certainly worth considering.
