Do I Have to Say Why I’m Resigning in A Resignation Letter?
You do not have to explicitly state why you are leaving in your resignation letter if you do not want to.
If you would like to, however, it is still best practice to be polite and professional in doing so.
The sample resignation letters above cite a better opportunity abroad as the reason for leaving, but you can customize the content to fit your personal situation.
No matter what, you should always thank the company for all the opportunities they provided you with and keep the letter professional and positive.
After all, you’re likely going to need your former employer to give you a reference for your new role, so you want to end on as good of terms as possible.
Things to Keep in Mind when Resigning
- When you are resigning from your job, there a few things to keep in mind:
- Provide two weeks’ notice if possible, unless the company has a policy for shorter notice periods
- Provide documentation of your resignation in writing don’t just give your boss verbal notice
- Be sure to thank the company and your colleagues for the opportunities you have been given
- Keep all communication professional and positive
- Follow all relevant policies when resigning
Your company HR department should be in contact shortly after receiving your letter to discuss the details of your resignation, such as any unused vacation days or relevant paperwork.
Keep in mind that a resignation letter is not a place to air grievances – save that for an exit interview if you are offered one.
Your focus should be on thanking the company and leaving on a positive note.
This is especially true if you’re leaving to pursue a better opportunity abroad, it sounds like you have a lot to look forward to!
